Subject: Fight for Additional Money for the 2011 Talent Search and EOC Slate!

December 7, 2010

Dear Talent Search and EOC Colleagues:

COE needs you to act immediately. This week the Senate is deciding on its TRIO appropriation for FY 2011, which funds both the TS and EOC competitions. In order to be successful in obtaining the highest amount of funding for Talent Search and EOC, we need every TS and EOC staff member, student, parent, alumnus, and friend of TRIO to outreach to both of their Senators today and voice the opinion that the Senate must keep the House increase of $25.6 million for FY 2011. This increase, when compared with the $15 million provided in the Senate bill, will allow for an estimated 100 additional TS and EOC grants to be awarded in the current competitions and a three-point higher cut off score. To contact your Senators, please visit www.senate.gov.

Senator XXX:

On behalf of the low-income and first-generation students, Veterans, and learners with disabilities who participate in TRIO programs in
(INSERT YOUR STATE), I ask that you contact Senators Inouye, Cochran, and Harkin to preserve the House Subcommittee increase of $25.6 million for TRIO for FY 2011 (for a total of $878.7 million) in the Senate Omnibus package.

During FY 2011 there will be grant competitions for Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC) - and both programs are now more important than ever. Talent Search helps middle and high school students make informed decisions in selecting and paying for colleges. This is quite timely given concerns about predatory practices used by for-profit institutions that lure low-income students into their programs.  Without additional funding for FY 2011, it is expected that Talent Search will lose 53,000 students. Similarly, EOC helps unemployed and underemployed adult learners re-enter the educational pipeline so that they will be prepared to re-join the workforce. EOC serves nearly 23,000 fewer students than it did in FY 2004, and the demand has never been higher in these tough economic times.

A vote for the inclusion of $25.6 million for TRIO in the FY 2011 omnibus appropriations package is a vote for a better education for our nation's students and the economy. Thank you for your support on this critical issue.

Respectfully,
