Essential Functions of Position                             

Identify, recruit, and select students for Student Support Service
program.  Provide individualized counseling for personal, career,
transfer and all academic matters. Maintain appropriate student
educational plans, student contacts, interpret placement test results.
Develop individual student contracts and plans of Support Services for
participants.  Provide activities and instrution designed to acquaint
students with the range of career options. Monitor and track students'
academic performance and progress in degree objectives to assure
effective use of services and successful attainment of program
objectives. Provide information on both the full range of federal
students financial aid programs and benefits to improve the financial
and economic literacy of students including financial planning for
postsecondary education.  Plan successful activities that are designed
to assist ESL and regular SSS students to apply for admission and obtain
financial assistance for enrollment in, graduate and professional
programs. Develop outreach activities to prepare students before they
enter college.  Maintain close working relationships with faculty and
their program participants.  Participate in the planning and
implementation of matriculation processes.  Monitor successful
completion rates of program participants by tracking student persistence
after first semester and/or first year in college. Meet the special
counseling needs of underrepresented student populations by implementing
a comprehensive retention program.  Develop reports for progress
monitoring activities. Perform other duties as assigned. 

   

Minimum Qualifications

Include a Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling,
clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling,
education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and
family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, or a valid
California Community College credential or the equivalent education
and/or experience and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of
the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender
identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community
college students.  (NOTE:  A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist
(MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to
Title 5, Section 53410.1)

 

Desirable Qualifications

Include preference for bi-lingual (Spanish) abilities; demonstrated
ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse socio-economic
and ethnic backgrounds; extent of cross cultural counseling experience,
extent of experience working with Hispanic students; demonstrated
experience working with multicultural/diversity counseling issues;
successful counseling experience in a community college; ability to
communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students and
staff; experience and knowledge of computer applications and technology
related to counseling functions; extent of professional experience
providing a broad array of community college counseling services;
potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and,
knowledge of student success models/orientation programs for retention.

 

Conditions of Employment

177 duty days per year contingent upon funding. 

 

Salary and Benefits 

Starting Salary: $51,992 - $78,276 based on education and experience.  A
doctoral stipend of $1,945 is available.  In addition, the District
offers an attractive fringe benefit package including health, dental,
and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance
as well as disability coverage for employees.  Employees are also
members of the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS).

 

Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the
minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

 

From the applicants who meet the  qualifications and who have submitted
all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the
candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications.
They will be invited to interview.  Interviewees may be asked to conduct
a short teaching demonstration and/or writing prompt.  

 

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions
and the teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable).
Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as
the "recommended candidates".  A hiring recommendation will be made by
the College President or Vice Chancellor and forwarded to the Board of
Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
