Ricardo,
Great chatting last week! I would love to help you bring a handful
of the College of the Sequoias Upward Bound students on the Close Up Program
later this spring.
I know you mentioned you work with roughly 58 students, mostly
juniors, from Lindsay, Farmersville, Woodlake and Firebaugh?
As you know, the Close Up Foundation facilitates structured
week-long programs in Washington, DC which feature a hands-on, civic education
curriculum, and a behind the scenes look at our government.
We run the programs every week of the school year and could easily
collaborate with you and the principals at each of the high schools to seek
approval and find a week for you to participate that works with everyone.
Principals easily see the value in this program. This is a life
changing program that gives students the knowledge, skills, and confidence to
become informed and active individuals. Our curriculum brings classroom lessons
to life and helps students understand how important they are to their
communities.
Each year we welcome over 2,000 students from California, and
almost 20,000 students from across the country. Along-side their peers and our
instructional staff, we provide students with the chance to witness democracy
in action, and the ability to become more involved citizens. High school
students even have the chance to navigate Capitol Hill and meet with their
members of Congress, not to mention, the potential to earn college credit
through the University of Virginia.
We additionally receive financial aid funding from Congress for
students who qualify, as well as provide full fellowships for adults to attend
along with participants.
We would be willing to award your personal your Upward Bound
program with some financial aid funding to subsidize the cost for students to
participate.
We will provide a full adult scholarship for you or an adult to
attend with the students, provided you have a group of 8 students
participating.
In the meantime, speak with the students and your colleagues and
let me know if you wish to proceed on this, and I can help you through the
process.
I look forward to hopefully making this happen for you and your
students.
Kind regards,
Megan

Good Morning Megan,
After meeting with other TRiO
personnel, they asked me to forward your contact information to them.
I’ve done just that, let’s hope some have the opportunity to get in
contact with you and that we are able to send some of our TRiO students to D.C.

Ricardo,
And I am thrilled to hear of your relationship to the Close Up
program! I still have my group photo too, all these years later! Isn’t
amazing!?
Many thanks for your offer to share the information. Please let the
other coordinators know that we still have a bit of federal funding available
to subsidize the student tuition for qualifying students interested in
participating on a program this school year, any week, from now, until July 1st,2010.
I also have a plethora of fundraising information as well, and happy to help
through the whole process.
Thank you again, and I look
forward to chatting in the near future, and hopefully working together soon!
Cheers,

Dear Ms. Sette,
I am thrilled to have received
this email and the possibility of giving our students the opportunity to visit
our Nation’s Capital. Thanks to Close Up, I had the opportunity to
do just that in the summer of ’94 and would love for some of my students
to partake in such an amazing opportunity.
Tomorrow I will be meeting with
other TRiO personnel from the Central California and will share with them your
email. Afterwards, I will relay their response and see how we can get our
students involved.
By the way, I still have the
group picture we took in front of the Capitol.

Subject: CENCAL TRIO Students and Close Up DC
Dear
Mr. Marmolejo,
I
am writing to determine if there might be a way for the Close Up Foundation to
collaborate with you and other California TRIO programs in order to give
students more opportunities and ways to expand on their college prep
experiences.
As you may
know, the Close Up Foundation is the nation’s largest nonprofit (501(c)(3))
citizenship education organization. Since its founding in 1970, Close Up
continues to facilitate structured, week-long programs in Washington, DC which
feature a hands-on, civic education curriculum, and a behind the scenes look at
our government. Each year we welcome over 2,000 students from the state,
and almost 20,000 students from across the country in grades 6-12. Along-side
their peers and our instructional staff, we provide students with the chance to
witness democracy in action. This is a valuable program that gives students the
knowledge, skills, and confidence to become informed and active citizens. High
school students even have the chance to navigate Capitol Hill and meet with
their members of Congress, not to mention, the potential to earn college credit
through the University of Virginia.
Each year
Close Up works closely with hundreds of schools, and several other TRIO
programs throughout the United States and provides students with the chance to
become more educated on the nation they live in, by welcoming them to our
capital, and allowing them to interact with other young people from around the
country. This is a wonderful and unique experience for the youth in your
community. Additionally, Close Up also receives federal funding and offers a
limited amount of financial assistance to each state to further help qualifying
students have the ability to attend our DC programs.
I
would like to set up time to speak with you to explain our foundation’s
program and to explore how we might be able to work together on further
engaging the youth of California.
I
plan to follow up with you next week via phone to discuss this in greater
detail, and hopefully we can determine if there is potential to collaborate. Or
please let me know who best to speak with regarding this matter. I can be
reached via the contact information below.
Many
thanks for your consideration, and I eagerly look forward to hearing from you,
and possibly working with you on further implementing the Close Up Program
among local TRIO participants this school year.
Sincerely,
Megan Sette
