I just finished a conference call and will be sending info out to all the UB community tonight, but I wanted to get this out to you as soon as possible.

  Joy

  Dear Colleague:

The Senate and House Authorizing Committees appear to be in the
  final
days of the Conference Committee which would put in place the TRIO
  law
for the next six years. The Senate is proposing to impose on
MATH/SCIENCE UPWARD BOUND PROGRAMS the requirement that 30% of all
entering students be at high risk of academic failure. The
  Department
has defined this group primarily in terms of students with GPA's
  below
2.5 and students who have failed No Child Left Behind Tests.

Please contact your Senators and Congressmen immediately and ask them
  to
share with Senator Kennedy (for Senators) and Congressman Miller
  (for
Members of the House) your concerns that such a requirement would
definitely limit your ability to prepare students for Science,
  Technology, Engineering and Math.

Should you have any questions, please contact Heath Alexander at
202-347-7430 or [log in to unmask]

Thank you for your continued advocacy on behalf of low-income and
  first-generation students.

  Sincerely,

  Arnold L. Mitchem

  President
